2015 Brings Great News

There is great news for the Veterans of St. Lucie County, a new veteran’s nursing home and four (4) new handicapped equipped vehicles to transport wheelchair bound veterans (those with walkers and veterans with K-9s) have been approved.

Commissioner Hutchinson was the driving force in getting Florida’s Governor Scott to award St. Lucie County a state of the art nursing facility for veterans. Commissioner Hutchinson rallied the local veterans and many others for their support, for this much needed facility.

The United Veterans of St. Lucie County, Inc. applied for a government grant in January 2014. The Section 5310 Seniors and Individuals with Disabilities Capital Assistance Program. The writing of this grant took almost a year to write.

Two members of the United Veterans (Ms. Donna Carlsen and Roy Brewer) met with Ms. Jayne Pietrowski (FDOT Coordinator) in early January. They  immediately began to gather data for the grant. Days, weeks, and months went by, in the acquiring of information and numerous phone calls to federal, state, and county agencies.  In October 2014, the 5310 grant application was completed and submitted for 2 vans and 2 bused.

On November 7th, 2015 Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) sent an email announcing approval of the grant.  The total grant was over $280.000, enough to purchase 4 vehicles.

Special thanks go to Mr. Joe Lusardi, Veteran Service driver and Mr. Tom Smith, Veteran Service Officer, both individuals are veterans. “Thank You” both for all your help!

The two handicapped vans have arrived and 2 buses should arrive in early July. Plans are to have all of the vehicles operational and providing service to our St. Lucie County Veterans by the end of July, 2015.

Special recognition goes to:  Ms. Jayne Pietrowski, FDOT, Ms. Nancy Weizman, FDOT, Ms. Corine Williams, St. Lucie County, and Ms. Marceia Lathou, St. Lucie County. Also want to thank Ms. Lazara Stinnette in Tampa for her help.  A “Thank You”  is extended to all the folks at the Federal level who helped answer many questions and provided guidance during the grant writing process.

These vehicles are dedicated to St. Lucie County Veterans with disabilities!!

Kind regards
